I spent last weekend away in London, and went to see the Kurt Schwitters exhibition at TATE Britain. It was great. I think one of the many things that you cant see from reproductions of his work is the complex layering of found materials, text and colour. I spent a long time sketching in the gallery, it was wonderful, and felt really indulgent. The last few trips Ive had to galleries have been with other people and spending time alone makes the experience just far more intimate. Having the space to reflect on work I want to make in a gallery ends up being much more affective on the practical work I produce after. On reflection after seeing this exhibition I keep arriving back to ideas about interior and exterior space and the bridge between. Also Schwitters use of colour is just exquisite.
At the end of the exhibition there was this wonderful Videostallation by artist Laure Prouvost which was transfixing and provocative. I don't think I would do it justice to describe it- so just go and see it for yourself. I thought and dreamt about it afterwards. I would like to go back and see it again. There is also an interactive performance by the artist in April where she invites you to take part in the search for her Grandfather, who was close friends with Kurt Schiwtters.
